Garage Transformation
Four months of sorting, tossing, selling and storing later, and here we are… our organised garage.
This project was a mammoth task and so much more time consuming than I ever expected!
This space had become the dumping ground for old furniture, cardboard boxes, childhood memories, as well as the usual bikes, sporting equipment, beach stuff and school stuff.
Plus we had a whole caravan worth of kitchen, dining, linen and general outdoor gear that needed a home after our epic adventure across Oz earlier in the year [ICYMI we were lucky enough to borrow a friends van for the trip and decked it out with all our own stuff]
Once we got home the task to add storage to the garage became urgent but the $10k+ quotes we received for custom cabinetry were eye watering and hubby was not on board…
So I started looking at alternatives, but struggled to find anything prefabricated that would maximise the height of our garage.
Enter the IKEA Ivar system… a serious game changer for this space. Easy on the budget, easy on the eye and super easy to put together [in fact I put together the entire cabinetry myself, only needing hubby’s assistance to attach the shelving units to the wall] and the 226cm height ticks all the boxes!
The white tubs are a perfect fit for the shelves [two x large or 3 x medium to a shelf] hold so much!
In the tubs we have stored:
📦Christmas decor, lights + garlands
📦Easter decor
📦Party supplies
📦Dress ups/costumes (for theme days/Book Week)
📦Caravan kitchen, linen + outdoor gear
📦Snow gear
📦Beach + snorkeling gear
📦Boat + fishing gear
📦Picnic rug + bag
📦Baby toys, books + clothes keepsakes
📦Hubby + my childhood keepsakes
I love the look of the all-white, uniform storage containers and the labels enhance the streamline look and are easy to update with just my label maker!
The addition of the rattan doors not only elevates the look of our garage storage but hides away all the bulky items we needed to store and wouldn’t fit in tubs [think suitcases, Esky, body boards, beach chairs, Cool Cabana] giving that streamlined look.
We also updated our mudroom storage wall [can you imagine my joy when I realised our 10 year old lockers fit perfectly within the Ivar system and with a quick angle-grind of the legs, we achieved a seamless look!]
Plus the boys now have room for their dirt bike gear + sports uniforms as well as their school bags + shoes, and a spot to sit to put them on.
And the biggest bonus of all is that my car now fits in its designated home!!
Tell me, what do you think of this space? Would something like this work in your home?
